| Wine: | 1970 Dalva Vintage |
| Notes: | On my last trip to Lisbon (Portugal), I brought back some Dalva 1970 which was on 'sale' at the Solar do Vinho do Porto, which is the Port Wine tasting house in Lisbon and is associated with the IVP. We opened it last night and although it was on sale due to its age and decline in taste, it was still enjoyable. Upon openning, your nose was hit by lots of alcohol followed by a little smoky smell. It was severly cloudy due to sediment, but we chose to keep most of the sediment in because it gave the wine the tannis that the decanted and filtered version lacked completely. Upon tasting it, your mouth was hit with tons of fruit and surprisingly little alcohol and pepper. With some sediment the wine right a good balance of tannins and fruit, but lacked pepper. Its color was a very nice light burgandy (after decanting & filtering) fit for a 30 year old. Overall, a very good buy ($30) but the tannins are decreasing and the pepper is almost gone, so this wine doesn't have long to live. Drink now. |
